I didn’t want Systorak to leave my side, though I would never have shown it. I am in a world I don’t quite understand, and he is my guide. An attractive, considerate, gentle, and sensual guide, to be more specific.

He makes me feel confident and sexy in a dress so tight it digs into the sides of my breasts. I haven’t worn something this skin-hugging in ages, nor have I had the confidence or inclination to. But wearing it around Systorak makes me feel invigorated and powerful, and there isn’t anything more attractive than a woman empowered, even to herself.

I wanted to play along, to not cause a ruckus within the world of this magnificent demon who had originally taken me from my home realm. People-pleasing is usually not a part of my personality, but something inside me, that same part that needed his talented fingers to move all over my body, wants to make him happy. Content, at the very least, with my presence at this affluent event.

I have my hands cupped in front of me, the urge to stick my chest out into the air and feel the cool brush against the top of my breasts, titillating, when a man approaches me from the opposite side of the room.

I glance back at Systorak, who looks stoic and solemn, standing off in his corner, when a charming voice enters my audible bubble.

“Good evening. I believe you are Miss Kingsfield, correct?”

I turn to find a demon, a taller, significantly leaner, and more cut version of Systorak, standing before me, a grin plastered on his face that was devilishly handsome. But it was also smug and reeking of insincerity.

“Yes, you would be correct.” I smile at him, the polite response like a knee-jerk for any woman.

He reaches out and takes one of my wrists that had been cupped over the other. I scowl at the sheer audacity but then remind myself I’m not at the tavern anymore; I am no longer queen of the castle.

I had to keep my cool, be pleasing and agreeable and not ruffle any feathers. So basically, act like what any man expects a woman to be like.

The strange demon brought his lips to my hand, kissing it like a prince in some fairy tale. Except, it isn't a fairy tale; the only lips I want on me are Systorak’s. And I want them everywhere.

“It is wonderful to make your acquaintance,” he says, still bowing, muttering into my hand. “My name is Lord Egretz, demon sorcerer.”

He stands tall, and I know what is coming before it arrives. One needn’t have empathic abilities to figure that out.

“May I have the pleasure of your accompaniment during this number?” he requests, holding out one hand, the other behind his back, once more like some prince in a storybook.

I gulped. I really don’t want to, but I fear any form of scandal arriving should I deny his request. So I nod, and he takes my hand delicately, leading me out into the middle of the floor.
